No Amnesty for Atrocities
Turning a Blind Eye to Justice Undermines Durable Peace Genuine initiatives aimed at ending the devastating armed conflict in northern Uganda are welcome, but amnesties for war crimes and crimes against humanity must not be on offer, Human Rights Watch said today. On that occasion, the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and its affiliate in Uganda, the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) highlight violations of Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) committed during pre-electoral period, which might impede the conduct of free, fair and transparent elections and call for the full respect of human rights during Election day. [Lire] - 14 février 2006 Government Threat to Free Elections Harassment of Opposition in Presidential, Parliamentary Poll The first multiparty elections in Uganda for two decades are unlikely to be free and fair because of the government’s ongoing harassment of the political opposition, Human Rights Watch said today. [Lire] - 3 janvier 2006 Attack on the Independence of the Courts Intervention by heavily armed security agents on the premises of the High Court in Kampala on 16 November 2005, led to the return to jail of 14 suspects of an armed group despite the ruling by the High Court Judge to grant bail. This was an attack on the rule of law and international human rights standards, Amnesty International and the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) said today. [Lire] - 22 novembre 2005 First ever arrest warrants by International Criminal Court A first step towards addressing impunity Arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for five senior leaders of the Lord’s Republican Army charged with crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Uganda since 1 July 2002, presents an important opportunity to address impunity for crimes that, over almost two decades, have caused the unimaginable suffering of thousands of people in northern Uganda.
