Meeting of the Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO), held on Thursday 17th May, 2007, at the NLC Sub-Secretariat Lagos Monday May 28 and Tuesday May 29 2007, are days of national protests 17 May 2007 - - http://www.nlcng.org/ The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUCN) and Joint Action Forum (JAF) under the leadership of the Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO), met in Lagos today Thursday 17th May 2007 on the massively rigged 2007 elections. It had earlier held widespread consultations with other mass organizations. The meeting saluted Nigerians who fought courageously against military dictatorship. However, it noted that since 1999, a cabal has imposed not just a civilian dictatorship, but it has also assumed that it has a right to impose leaders on us through fraudulent elections. LASCO strongly hold that this subversion of the peoples will is dangerous, unacceptable and must be resisted. In furtherance of this, the NLC, TUC and JAF resolved to mobilize Nigerians for mass protests. Therefore, Monday 28th May and Tuesday 29th May 2007 have been declared as days of protests all over the country. On the first day, all Nigerians should stay at home while on May 29, 2007 when the official "SWEARING" in ceremonies are on, Nigerians should in their communities and localities hold their own democracy rallies to protest the rigged elections. LASCO realizes that there are few instances, states and constituencies where the people courageously snatched victory from the jaws and paws of the election riggers. But it is important that even in such places, the people should join the two-day protests because we all have a duty to defend democracy. There is no greater danger to democracy than an unrepresentative government. These protests are about the Nigerian people reclaiming their stolen sovereignty. It is about ensuring that the votes count and that the will of the people and their sovereignty prevail. LASCO also clarifies that these protests are not against personalities, for or against particular political parties. Rather, these protests are about our future and the future of our children. Our protests are also against the poverty imposed on us by this regime, which also perpetually keep us in darkness after fritting away trillions of Naira. Our protests are against those who sell our collective wealth and cannot even account for the proceeds. Our protests are against a regime that denies workers their legitimate wages and salary increases. They are against a cabal that denies workers their monetization benefits, carries out mass sack while also imposing high taxes on the few who are still employed. LASCO warn the Presidency and its hangers on against resorting to violence; it will be a vain attempt to stop the protests. We shall also ensure that any person or group that perpetrates violence against the Nigerian people during or after these protests will be brought to justice. Specifically, we warn the Inspector General of Police, Mr Sunday Ehindero who as announced that he intends to shed the blood of Nigerians. If he were to carry out such treat, himself, his principals and cohorts will be brought to book no matter how long it takes. The LASCO gives full solidarity to tommorow’s court boycott directed by the leadership of the Nigeria Bar Association and other on going protests against the elections. We also give full support to oil, electricity, and other workers who are actively fighting the desperate attempts by the out going Presidency to sell off major institutions by May 29, 2007. |
