G8’s Completely Predictable Failure
The G8 meeting in Gleneagles Scotland delivered a rebuff not only to the 3 billion people who live in poverty around the world but also to the Make Poverty History Campaign that had created expectations that the G8 was ready to announce measures to wipe out poverty. Today’s confirmation of a deal to cancel the debts of 18 impoverished countries, 14 of which are in Africa, leaves the majority of African countries trapped under the burden of illegitimate debt. Africa Action also rejected as inadequate the $25 billion annual increase in aid to Africa by 2010. The complete failure to make progress on trade reforms and climate change, as well as the absence of a plan to stop genocide in Darfur, Sudan, made this year’s G-8 Summit an ineffective response to Africa’s challenges. [Lire] 7 July 2005 Africa Action Talking Points on the G-8 and Africa The Group of 8 (G-8) rich country leaders meet this week in Scotland to adopt a set of proposals on Africa ostensibly aimed at helping African countries reduce poverty levels by half over the next decade. The G-8 comprises the world’s seven richest countries - the U.S., Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Italy - and Russia. Together, these countries exercise decisive control over international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Today’s actions formed part of a Global Day of Action targeting France, Germany and Japan for their failure to support 100% debt cancellation and full funding for the Global Fund.
